Backwards America - Part 3

Whether or not you support the war in Iraq, this is completely unacceptable.

The anti-war leftists have reached a new low. Apparently everybody is entitled to free speech... except, of course, the people who died to earn it.

In a city measure that passed 8-1, Berkeley City has officially written the U.S. Marine Corps stating that they are "uninvited and unwelcome intruders" in the city. A member of the Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission was also quoted as saying, "I see the protest as taking a proud and courageous stand."

Actually, I see this as a most cowardly act of appeasement strapped to the end of a two-by-four and shamefully served upside the troops' head. Passing a measure calling troops "uninvited, unwelcome intruders" is disgraceful and any council members who supported the measure should be tried in court for violating the Constitution by infringing on the free speech of the United States military. This is disgusting.

And if that's not enough, in the same measure, the city actually encouraged the anti-war hippie group CodePink to fight the Marines by granting them their own free designated parking spot right in front of the Marine's recruiting office. Berkeley City then slapped nearby businesses in the face when it ignored their pleas to stop CodePink from disrupting business with their loud protests. Several business owners have complained that CodePink protestors drive away business and harass patrons during their protests. Berkeley boldly proclaimed it doesn't seem to care, though, as it granted CodePink a free sound permit which allows them protest as loud as they please while the military office tries to go about their day-to-day tasks.

In speaking of the military that selflessly protects his right of free speech, council member Max Anderson said, "If we can provide a space for ordinary people to protest this barbarity, we ought to do so." That's the only word Berkeley can use to describe the military: Barbarity

But they want you know that they still support the troops. Really.

At what point can we question the patriotism of these hippies? If you ask me, it's time we pull some of Berkeley's federal funding.

UPDATE: ...and it sounds like Senator Jim DeMint wants to do just that - pull Berkeley's federal funding:

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) released the following statement in response to the decision by the City Council of Berkeley, California to evict the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station from the city.

“This is a slap in the face to all brave service men and women and their families. The First Amendment gives the City of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money. If the city can’t show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer funded handouts. I am currently drafting legislation to ensure that American taxpayers aren’t forced to pay for this insult by rescinding all of the earmarks for Berkeley in the Omnibus Appropriations bill, and to transfer the funds to the Marine Corps.”

That's all fine and dandy, but I think DeMint needs to take it a step further and pull ALL of Berkeley's federal funding until they recant their vile troop-hating measure and publicly apologize.

Why on earth does the city of Berkeley, California have to issue a statement condemning the war in Iraq?

Last I checked the Commander in Chief in concert with Congress are in charge of our nation's military.
Berkeley does not have power to approve nor disapprove anything related to our nation's military,
which means this is nothing more than grandstanding to bring attention to what is already considered the most liberal town in America.

I can't wait to see Berkeley fall into the San Francisco Bay during the Second Coming. Where is Guvenah Ahnold? Can he issue a statement against these guys officially declaring them to be "girly men?"
